A Chinese autonomous region since 1951, Tibet was a province or part of the other Chinese provinces over the long Chinese history. It is named Bod Ljong in Tibetan language and called Xizang or Sitsang in Chinese. It had many names in the ancient China's dynasties but the present name was merely fixed in the Qing dynasty (1616-1911). Lhasa is the capital of Tibet.
Tibet is bordered on the south by Myanmar, India, Bhutan and Nepal, on the west by India, on the north by Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Qinghai Province, and on the east by Sichuan and Yunnan Provinces. The capital city is Lhasa.
