Leshan

Leshan (Le-shan, literally meaning "happy mountain") is a prefecture-level city located in the southwest part of Sichuan Province, at the intersection of the Mingjiang River, the Dadu River and the Qingyi River. The city covers an area of 12,827 sq km and has a population of 3.5 million. It is on the southwestern fringe of the Red Basin in southern Sichuan, about 120 km from Chengdu.

Climate
Leshan has a subtropical climate with plenty of rainfall and four distinct seasons. The average temperature is 16.5-18.0 Celsius, while the average annual precipitation exceeds 1,000 mm.

Transportation

Transportation in Leshan is very convenient and mainly relies on highways and airlines. Expressways and railways connect the city with Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province. Leshan has no airport, but it is 150 km from Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport. There are many daily coach/buses to Leshan from Chengdu. Tourists can take bus/coach at Chengdu Beimen Bus Station, Nanmen Bus Station, Xin Nanmen Bus Station, Ximen Bus Station, Chengdu Chadianzi Bus Station, Shiyang Bus Staion, Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport Bus Station.

Leshan Dishes
Leshan is also famous for its dishes.Delicious dishes include Qiaojiao Beef, which is a special soup with spicy beef, Xiba Bean Curd, Tianpi Duck, Leshan BBQ,and bacon dumplings.

Local Dialect
The Leshan dialect, part of the Southern linguistic system, is very different from the dialects of other cities in the provence of Sichuan, which belong to the Northern system. Some researchers say the pronunciation of Leshan dialects represent an archaic form of Chinese pronunciation.

Famous Tourist Attractions
Leshan is rich in historical and cultural relics as well as beautiful natural scenery. Some famous recommended tourist sites as follows:

-Mount Emei, one of four Buddhist shrines in China, is located in Emei County, currently under administration of Leshan. In 1996, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

-Leshan Giant Buddha (Leshan Dafo),the largest stone-carved buddha in the world, was carved out of a cliff located at Lingyun Mountain on the south bank of the Min River of Leshan City. Like the Mt. Emei, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996.

-Sansu Temple

-Wuyou Mountain

-Lingyun Mountain

-Guicheng Mountain

-Han Dynasty Tombs.
